Happy Chap Goh Meh

February 10th, 2017

Chap Goh Meh marks the 15th night of Chinese New Year in Hokkien, which is also the end of the Chinese New Year celebration and commercially known as Chinese Valentine’s Day.

The tradition of throwing mandarin oranges originated from Penang. Single ladies participate in this activity as a way of proclaiming love to someone they admire or ask for blessings to find themselves a good partner.

Single ladies will throw mandarin oranges into the sea or river and bachelors will fish them out from on the other site. Single ladies will write their names and telephone numbers on the oranges so that they can get to know the bachelors that picked up their oranges.
