About Gaya Island

Gaya Island is an island located near to the downtown of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. This island is widely known as the largest island in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. To be precise, the word "Gaya" is derived from a Bajau word called "Gayo" which bring forth the meaning of "big".

Since 1923, Gaya Island has been a forest reserve, and this island is formed with dense, virgin tropical forest. Travellers that fancy adventurous outdoor activities would adore Gaya Island, because there is a 20 KM of hiking trails, along with a few 5 stars resorts including Gayana Eco Resort which home to the Marine Ecology Research Centre.

There are a few drop-off points for arriving ferries at Gaya Island. Usually, ferry operators that transport travellers to Gaya Island are organised by the respective resorts. Hence, travellers will only alight at the drop-off point of their chosen stay. Travellers who wish to book their trip to either one of the resorts can make the reservation at the resorts’ office in the terminal.

How to Get to Gaya Island

Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal acts as the main gateway for travellers who wish to visit the islands in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (Gaya Island, Sapi Island, Manukan Island, Mamutik Island and Sulug Island). From Kota Kinabalu International Airport, travellers may make their way to Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal with car that takes about 2 hours. Then followed by 20 minutes ferry transfer to Gaya Island.
