About Labour Day

Ever wondered about how Labour Day started? Or why workers get a day off whenever the day comes around? Labour Day 2019 is the only time for workers to enjoy a well-deserved break even if it’s just a day off. Labour Day is regarded as an annual holiday to commemorate the achievements of workers across the globe, including the establishment of the 8-hour movement which advocated 8 hours for work, 8 hours for recreation, and 8 hours for rest. Previously, labourers were often forced to work up to 12 hours a day and 7 days a week hence prompted the establishment of Labour Day.

Labour Day is in conjunction with International Worker’s Day whereby it falls on the same day as Labour Day date, which is on the 1st of May each year. Labour Day Malaysia was first introduced by former Deputy Prime Minister Tun Dr. Ismail Abdul Rahman in hopes that the decision made as a day dedicated to hardworking workers which befit the national aspirations. Globally known as “May Day”, the locals generally spend their Labour Day holiday to visit their family, go for a short getaway or have a relaxing afternoon at home with their loved ones. Occasionally, Labour Day Malaysia also includes peaceful rallies by workers to advocate for better working conditions.
