Chiang Mai is the largest city in Northern Thailand, served by Chiang Mai Railway Station. It functions as the terminus station on the Northern Line, operating ten trains daily excluding the luxury Eastern and Oriental Express that travels between Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.
The station is located on the east side of the Ping River and was originally established in 1922 for gauge rolling stock service. The first train operated between Lampang and Chiang Mai, with the Northern Express introduced the same year. The original station building was destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943 and was rebuilt and reopened in 1948.
Travelers can reach Chiang Mai by train from any station along the Northern Line, including Bangkok, Bang Sue Junction, Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Phichit, and Denchai. The journey from Bangkok takes approximately 11 hours.
Within Chiang Mai, local transport options such as songthaews and tuk-tuks are available to passengers for local travel, with fares varying based on distance.
The station offers advanced facilities for travelers including a ticket counter, ATM, café, sheltered waiting area, free Wi-Fi, taxi stand, parking, and nearby stalls and convenience stores within walking distance. The ticket counter operates daily from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
