One of Malaysia's biggest transportation projects is the East Coast Rail Link. More people and goods will be able to get between the Klang Valley and the east coast states through it.

Passenger services have not begun as of August 5, 2026. As long as the final building, testing, and government approvals go smoothly, the project's first operational part should start running in January 2027.

What does the ECRL mean?

About 665 kilometers of train track make up the ECRL, which connects the Klang Valley to Pahang, Terengganu, and Kelantan.

Speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour are possible on passenger trains. As soon as the service starts, the trip from Gombak to Kota Bharu should take about four hours.

Overall project progress was reported to be 93.66% in April 2026, with the Kota Bharu–Gombak section set to be finished in December 2026.

Buses will be replaced by ECRL?

On some long-distance routes, ECRL will offer a faster train option, but buses will still be very important.

A lot of towns, villages, jetties, and tourist spots aren't right next to train stations. Bus companies will keep doing the following:

• Services that go straight between towns
• Feeder service to places
• Overnight trips
• Ways to get to islands and piers
• Links that ECRL doesn't handle

Eventually, travelers may be able to use ECRL along with local buses, ferries, and e-hailing services.

As of August 15, 2026, the official prices for passengers, the number of departures, and the final schedules had not been made public.

People who are traveling shouldn't depend on unofficial fare predictions. Keep an eye out for updates from Malaysia train Link, the Ministry of Transport, and the chosen train company as the start date gets closer.

What the ECRL means for travel

People who don't want to drive long distances might find it easier to get to East Coast destinations with the railway. It might also work for shorter trips over the weekend between Kelantan, Pahang, Terengganu, and the Klang Valley.

But for tourism links to work, there needs to be reliable last-mile transportation between stops, town centers, hotels, beaches, and boat ports.

People who travel within the country should be aware that the ECRL will change the way they travel, but they should also keep in mind that it won't be open to passengers until August 2026.
