Hol Day or Hari Hol is referred to as the passing away of the previous sultan. In Johor, it is a religious event in tandem with the death of Almarhum Sultan Iskandar of Johor. Interestingly, this event dates back centuries ago before the country even gained its independence from the British in 1896, a year after the death of Sultan Abu Bakar.
It is expected for Muslims in Johor to pray and ask God to forgive the sins of the previous sultan as well as to bless the state of Johor on Hari Hol Almarhum Sultan Iskandar 2019. The late sultan’s good deeds and contribution are also remembered on this day.
For Hari Hol Almarhum Sultan Iskandar 2019, various prayer and tahlil will be held in many mosques. On an elevated scale, a specific ceremony will take place at the Royal Mausoleum at Bukit Mahmoodiah in Johor Bahru, where the royals laid their dead souls to rest.
The Sultan of Johor will lead the service to lay flowers and sprinkle scented water over the graves after the reading of the prayer by the state’s Mufti. The service will be followed by other prayers and a ritual known as tahlil. Individuals regarded as District Officers, Legislative Assembly Members, Members of Parliament, Head of Department of Islam as well as Datukship holders are obligated to attend the ceremony.
