Apart from Malaysia Independence Day celebration or more known as Merdeka Day, Malaysia Day is yet another meaningful day held every 16th of September each year to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian Federation back in 1963. Malaysia Day date marks the joining of Malaya, Singapore and North Borneo, which includes Sabah and Sarawak, in forming Malaysia. However, Singapore left the federation two years after the establishment date.
Previously observed as a state public holiday in Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia Day is currently recognised as a national public holiday declared by former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. This public holiday is a significant day dedicated to foster the Malaysian spirit and to remind the people about the struggles faced by their forefathers in achieving the hard-earned independence and freedom that they are experiencing today.
